REAL-Life Adventures
Wild (2014)
Her writings were adapted into this inspiring film starring Reese Witherspoon as the novice hiker who overcomes her troubles by walking the Pacific Crest Trail. The film begins in the Mojave Desert, climbs Mount Hood, Oregon’s highest peak, and visits Crater Lake before ending at the Bridge of the Gods in Cascade Locks on the Oregon/Washington border. Director Jean-Marc Vallée insisted on shooting the film on location.
Tracks (2013)
A teenage Mia Wasikowska plays Robyn Davidson, who rode camels across the Australian desert for nine months in Tracks, another autobiographical adaption. She visits Uluru and Coffin Bay on her way from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean via sweltering wilderness. Robyn just had her dog and a photographer (Adam Driver), thus it’s an inspiration for solo travelers.
In The Wild (2007)
After giving up his things and money to charity, graduate Christopher McCandless hitchhiked across Northern America to Alaska to live in the wild. Sean Penn directed this touching portrayal of Christopher, alias “Alexander Supertramp”, and starred Emile Hirsch in many of his genuine locales. Experience tranquil Lake Tahoe, Beard’s Hollow camping, Colorado River kayaking, and untamed horse running. Before things become worse, there’s enough to envy.
Lion (2016)
Lion offers a virtual vacation to India and a good cry. It follows Saroo (Sunny Pawar), a young Indian child who unintentionally takes a train to Kolkata and becomes homeless. The adult Saroo (Dev Patel) explores his memories and the internet for his childhood home and family after being adopted by an Australian couple. Compassion and armchair travel to Tasmania and India are in this film.
Under Tuscan Sun (2003)
This memoir adaption about a divorcee finding herself has gorgeous setting and Diane Lane’s performance. Frances Mayes’ friends take her to Tuscany, where she falls in love with a rundown property and buys it on a whim. She becomes a giant fixer-upper after meeting amazing individuals like Polish builders and an eccentric elderly British actor. Imagine charming hillside cottages overlooking sparkling waterways in Cortona, near Arezzo, where the film was filmed.
Finding the Wilderpeople (2016)
Oscar-winner Taika Waititi’s charming comedy-drama takes you bushwalking in New Zealand. This fun family adventure follows gruff foster uncle Hec (Sam Neill) and his mischievous little charge Ricky (Julian Dennison) into the jungle for a thrilling adventure and a chance to practice their survival skills. Hec calls the sights “majestical” and much of it was shot in Auckland.
